Escada Resort 2012

The ESCADA Group is a globally operating group of companies in the luxury segment producing and selling high-class clothing and accessories.

Escada’s roots go back to 1976 when Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley founded their first fashion house, which later became ESCADA AG. In November 2009, the worldwide business of former ESCADA AG was acquired by ESCADA Luxembourg S.à r.l., a company indirectly owned by a trust of the Mittal family.

Today, ESCADA Luxembourg S.à r.l. is the parent company of the ESCADA Group consisting of more than 20 international subsidiaries. With around 1,260 points of sale, ESCADA is present in over 80 countries worldwide.

ESCADA ranks among the global market leaders for ready-to-wear women’s fashion in the high-end segment.

Escada’s Resort 2012 collection is elegant and ladylike, with shades of gray mixed with dreamy hues that are misty in washed fresco: framboise, bellini, and feather.

Old World Made New

Reminiscent of jewels discovered on lost Spanish galleons, each piece of Armenta jewelry is hand-crafted from precious metals and unique gemstones. The custom quality of Armenta appeals to men and women looking for timeless design elements they can layer and enhance to build up a distinctly personal collection. Together these lines honor the noble heritage of Spanish culture and literature that have made certain figures of the past, real and imaginary, objects of fascination for centuries.

Emily Armenta, the genius behind the brand, believes that through art we have a voice and a message that needs to be heard. “The underlying message that is intricately woven through out each collection is to challenge the status quo, embrace diversity, and embrace the struggle to make a difference,” she says. “Change does not come easily and does not come without sacrifices.”

Emily is inspired by other artists and great leaders, and their stories they tell through their art or the struggles that they have overcome. Therefore, many of the pieces are inspired by famous works of art found throughout Spain, such as poetry, paintings, architecture, and sculptures. Certain pieces are physical representations of images found in works of art, which is to pay homage to the artist’s message of inspiration.

For Emily, jewelry is about the creative process and the deeper meaning behind art. “Designs often come to me at night or in a dream. Therefore, I believe that it should not be limited by one element, but rather explore all elements and create the unexpected.”

In search of her own Duende, Emily discovered a window into the work of Spain’s most famous and important poet of the twentieth century, Federico García Lorca. “I’ve been captivated by Lorca’s idea of ‘duende’.”

“Thus duende is a power and not a behavior; it is the struggle that one must endure to create something of greatness”.

Each piece of jewelry that is handcrafted tells a story. “And after hours and hours of work on each piece, finally, there are those moments when we know–not from our thoughts, but from the “duende that climbs inside . . . from the soles of the feet”–that what we are creating is magical.”

Emily strives to push the boundaries and attempt the unexpected. She believes in unleashing the creative force within. “Like a painter, I explore working with and mixing many different metals and stones to create a beautiful work of art.”

The story behind the men and women who work at the studio is truly one of inspiration and embodies the American Dream. “I feel that I have been given a chance in life to make a difference in the lives of others and challenge the status quo,” says Emily. “This belief is a guiding principle at Armenta that we all embrace and strive to pass on to others.”

These Boots are made for Walking, Working, and Working It.

Known for rustic Americana style and on the forefront of fashion, The Frye Company has come a long way in the last 150 years. In 1863, John A. Frye opened the doors of a small shop on Elm Street in Marlboro, Massachusetts. The shoes he made weren’t icons of fashion or fanciful in style. They served a simple purpose: to ease the daily working lives of the hundreds of factory workers in that small New England town.

The individuals who wore the first Frye shoes were people who valiantly labored, honing skill and craft, supporting their families and community. When homesteading sparked adventurous New England families to head west in the mid and late 1800s, many of those pioneers wore Frye boots along the journey.

In time, John Frye’s family would grow and, along with it, The Frye Company would expand. Each generation of Frye men dedicated themselves to the art and craft of shoemaking, creating new patterns, discovering new materials, and even inventing shoe-making machinery. Their fervor for the process of crafting footwear as durable as it is beautiful has been the company’s benchmark ever since. And this dedication has helped The Frye Company craft footwear with a long and illustrious history.

Frye’s Harness boot is rooted in this tradition and continues to draw inspiration from the American Cavalry. During a 1938 trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye’s grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who noted his difficulty in finding the Wellington styles he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill these requests for boots through World War II.

By mail order, the company supplied thousands of brave soldiers and pilots with Frye Wellingtons, known as Jet boots. Frye boots traveled the world on the feet of American servicemen, from Normandy to Okinawa – even General Patton wore a pair.

Today Frye’s classic Harness boot holds a treasured place in American culture, has been featured in international fashion spreads and enjoys strong sales all over the world. The line still includes many styles (Cavalry, Harness, Campus) based closely on their 1860 originals.

The Campus boot featured a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and styles of the 1960s and 1970s. The Smithsonian Institute, in its search for items to best represent America during the Sixties, chose a pair of Fryes that proudly remain on display today in our nation’s capital.

Frye’s history and heritage is told in every stitch of every shoe they’ve made for nearly 150 years: across cultural shifts and changes in fashion, for generation upon generation. Now, Frye boots are accessorized and envied on city streets, worked and roughed up on country roads, and chosen above all others for their inimitable style and uncompromising quality.

And yet, despite Frye’s reach and success as a boot maker, the company’s mission – to make the best-looking, hardest-working, longest-lasting shoes and leather goods – hasn’t changed since the first days on Elm Street.

The Ever Charming Donni

Designer Alyssa Wasko uses angel wings to symbolize the presence of her father.

Nearly three years ago, when designer Alyssa Wasko’s father’s life was taken as a result of an accident, she turned to creativity to usher in the healing process. “He remains with me in everything I do, which is why I am so proud to dedicate donni charm in his honor,” she says. “It has been no small battle to cope with this devastation, but in the process donni charm has allowed me to inspire others who have experienced loss by enabling them to duplicate a positive healing process.”

Alyssa always loved working on various fashion projects and in light of the tragedy, she began trying her hand at scarves. Upon her return to college that fall,  she gave a friend one of the first scarves she created. Through the support of friends and family, the scarves thrived in sorority trunk shows and philanthropic endeavors, and Alyssa watched as her scarves took on a whole new meaning.

“Naming the project was the easiest yet most heartfelt step of the process,” explains Alyssa. “Those close to my father affectionately called him ‘Donny,’ and as my mother later pointed out, I was his charm. Thus, “donni charm” was created. The scarves wrap around me like the arms of his hug, and the good luck charms hang close to my heart where he will always remain.”

Team donni’s goals are motivated by the true meaning behind donni charm.  Donni charm aims to remain unique and sophisticated, but always with a dash of fun, as Alyssa’s father Donny lived every day of his life.

Sartorial Slouch

“I like simplicity. It makes the woman important. I want clothes to help us relax into ourselves.” – Eileen Fisher

In 1984, Eileen Fisher was having trouble getting dressed. At the time, she was working as an interior and graphic designer. “In my mind I kept seeing these simple shapes for clothes,” she says. “I knew they had to be beautiful colors, great fabrics and have certain shapes and proportions that worked together.” Eileen says this was her “aha!” moment.

With no sewing skills and only $350 in the bank, Eileen’s belief in these simple shapes were the beginning of something good. “I had four shapes made up and took them to The Boutique Show in New York.” Encouraged by $3,000 in orders, Eileen expanded her line to eight pieces, with the second show bringing in $40,000 in orders. “Suddenly, I wasn’t just Eileen Fisher. I was EILEEN FISHER, INC.”

“Design is what drives us and our business,” says Eileen. “We find that good design is a result of paying attention to what women want and need. The women who wear our clothes want to experience the magic that happens when you put on a piece of clothing that has been pared to its simple, pure essence. It comes alive on your body. It makes you move differently. It changes the way you think and feel about yourself.”

“I have two teenagers, great friends, five sisters, a brother, a mother and on most days, a very full calendar. I imagine my life is as busy as yours. I go to work, help my daughter pick out a prom dress, walk with friends along the river and every now and then host a party. In these modern and sometimes overscheduled times, I want EILEEN FISHER to be known for clothes you don’t have to think too much about. You put them on and know that they will give you the comfort, ease and elegance to move with confidence through your day.”

Visit Maison Weiss – Highland Village on September 13 & 14 and MW2 on the Square in Oxford on October 15-17 to view Eileen’s Fall line, including Sartorial Slouch – fashion made comfortable.

The Haskell Heritage

Miriam Haskell was elegant. And she possessed an authentic desire to create the impossible.  Her friends were “the” New York and Hollywood glitterati and she knew how to entertain. Many were in theater and film, and they appreciated her clever, eccentric manner. Fame was not foreign to her, nor was it something to which she aspired. She aspired to design and has been credited as the woman who started the costume jewelry “movement.”

Born in 1899 at the height of the Art Nouveau Vanguard, Haskell was one of four children, and the daughter of small-town merchants in New Albany, Indiana. Some 30 years later, Miriam Haskell would have tea with Coco Chanel while selecting the upcoming season’s beads at Madame Gripoix’s – the finest source in Paris. While Miriam would bring her young design artist, Frank Hess, Chanel was alone. They would talk, share ideas, trade fashion celeb secrets. They were among a new class in the Roaring Twenties: independent women who began their careers designing jewelry to complement high fashion clothing in an exclusive boutique.

Miriam Haskell opened her first boutique in 1926, “Le Bijou de L’Heure” in New York’s McAlpin Hotel. She created collections for the society women of her day, the lavish productions of Flo Ziegfeld, as well as the couture of Coco Chanel. Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball, the Duchess of Windsor, to name a few, were among her greatest patrons. It wasn’t long before her spectacular, custom-made jewels were sought after, collected and cherished. If history is any indication of the value of a Miriam Haskell piece, today’s collection promises continued appreciation- be it at an auction house, by chic women throughout the world or simply by generations to come.

Almost unheard of in today’s marketplace, pieces in the Miriam Haskell collection are still made entirely by hand. The value of a Miriam Haskell piece was – and still is – a reflection of this workmanship and meticulous detail. Each bead, each crystal, each pearl is picked up by hand, hand-wired to an intricate brass filigree backing, and ultimately backed to a second filigree, concealing any trace of its construction. One piece may take as long as three days to create.

A Miriam Haskell piece of jewelry is tomorrow’s collectibles, today.

Gemstones, Pearls, & Statement!

Designer Tia Neyman of TiaMia Jewelry set out to create fashion jewelry to flatter it’s wearer. Having spent much of her life working in the fashion industry, Tia’s eye for color and texture helps her create pieces that light up a woman’s face by enhancing the natural tones of her skin and eyes through sparkling gemstones and lustrous fresh water pearls.

This fall, stunning pieces infuse TiaMia’s classic elegance with a modernist edge. Industrial yet whisper light aluminum chains are juxtaposed with ladylike jewels to create an innovative sophistication. Stunning freshwater pearls nest inside a netted backdrop of chains in your choice of edgy black, chic gunmetal, or timeless gold. Elements of petrified wood, lava rock and glittering gemstones in a warm color palette suggest a refined, organic feel. The collar length showcases a beautiful décolleté while longer chains can be worn multiple ways to create a dramatic cascading effect.

Never forgetting the timeless style of her longtime customers, Tia has revamped her classic, yet always dramatic pearl and gemstone looks with a new collection of autumnal colors. Freshwater pearls in bronze, golds, reds, olives & indigo resemble falling leaves as they cluster naturally at the nape of the neck, while hammered gold earrings cradle pearls in coordinating shades. Always changing with the seasons, TiaMia Jewelry has combined the everlasting grace of pearls with the defiance of chains and leather to create an entirely new look this fall. Young, fresh and provocative, long chains are entwined with twisted leather to resemble barbed-wire, and then swathed with tiny freshwater pearl clusters. The result is modern and chic with a rebellious charm.

Using only the best provisions and hand crafting the most flattering shapes, TiaMia Jewelry is specially designed to make women feel more beautiful while remaining accessibly affordable. With her strong individualist fashion and eye for timeless style, TiaMia handcrafts each piece with one thing in mind: You.

Stop by Maison Weiss at Highland Village on August 17th and 18th for an up-close-and-personal visit with Tia Neyman and a first look at her fall line.
